Many thanks to VB reader Richard Heath for sending in his view of the vehicle restrictions taking place on Ryde Pier at the moment. We love to see a diverse range of opinions, so if you have a comment, feel free to send in a response or leave a comment below. Ed
Now, after reading the many developments surrounding the maintaining of Ryde pier it seems to me that everyone is focusing more on the inconvenience / cost of the whole project.
Has anyone thought of the substantial benefits of this? No?
Well, you might be glad to hear that I have.
The Isle of Wight is set to become an Eco Island.
Eco Pier
What you might ask, does that have to do with the pier!? Let me explain.
Now with the closure of car access, people are having to walk up and down the pier (apart from riding the train). With this in mind, it must mean that the carbon footprint of the pier has been reduced by not having endless streams of cars running up and down it.
Wightlink (unbeknownst to them) have created an Eco pier!
I personally would paint the whole pier green to mark this occasion.
Healthier Island
With the vast majority of people now having to walk up the pier, does this not mean that we are creating a healthier Island?
That morning commute will feel so much better knowing that you are healthier by doing it.
Even during the hard winter times you needn’t worry as this recent topic from the VentnorBlog will help.
Lets not get bogged down on all the negatives
In my opinion they should keep it closed to vehicles and save all that money being spent.
Invest that money into a bridge (I’m just stirring).
