Plans to convert High Street storage space into a one-bedroom flat

An application has been submitted to the Isle of Wight council for ‘change of use permission’ to convert ancillary storage at the former Vectis Electrical building to a one-bedroomed flat.

The building can be found on The Avenue in Freshwater, which forms part of the town’s High Street location, backing onto Tennyson Road.

One bedroomed flat
The two-storey property is currently vacant and features a commercial outlet on the ground floor,
which has ancillary storage area at the back of the property, and a self-contained two-bedroomed flat on the first floor.

The applicant proposes that the ground floor flat would host an open plan kitchen, dining and living area, with bathroom and bedroom towards the rear.

Due to the Town Centre designation, there is no requirement to provide off-street parking, but the property benefits from an external amenity area at the rear, plus secure bicycle storage.

Although the plans could be seen to remove ancillary storage for the retail unit (currently vacant), they would be addressing the issue of much-needed housing.
