Plans to expand Carp-rearing business which supplies nationwide as well as locally

A carp-rearing business on the Isle of Wight is looking to expand as business increases.

Based at Downend, Combley Farm already has a well-establish carp breeding business, but applications to the Isle of Wight council look to grow the business.

In a major development, four new fish breeding ponds and a store building are proposed for the fish farm and lakes.

Supplying nationwide
Planning documents, submitted by agent Norman White, said the work is planned to increase the supply of fish to angling businesses nationwide, as well as on the Island.

The store building will include holding tanks and filters to keep the carp in a healthy state, prior to their export, as well as fish food storage.

Depth allows rapid growth
The new lakes will have an average depth of 2.2 metres, encouraging the carp to grow rapidly, Mr White said, to a size acceptable to the fishing community.

The store building will be kept to the minimum size necessary to accommodate the commercial vehicles and machinery, Mr White said, and coloured green to ensure it would not be intrusive to the locality.

The further development, Mr White said, would not cause any loss to the farm’s other activities.

The public consultation runs until 12th September.

The Environment Agency has submitted no objection to the additional fish rearing ponds.
