Play Lane Millennium Green in Haylands, Ryde is one of the very best in the UK – and that’s official.

This green space is among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that will today (Thursday) receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Fifth consecutive year
Play Lane Millennium Green was created in 2000 as one of a number of projects designed to mark the Millennium. This area of oak woodland and open spaces with its pond and picnic areas is open to the public, and has become a favourite spot for dog walkers and ramblers as well as being used as a pleasant shortcut between Binstead and upper Ryde.

Pamela Sim, secretary of Play Lane Millennium Green Trust, said,

“We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the fifth consecutive year from Keep Britain Tidy.

“This Award recognises and highlights that people in Ryde and Binstead are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality. We are very grateful to our dedicated band of volunteers who help to maintain the Green and especially the IW Green Gym who put in so much effort on their visits to us each year.”

20th anniversary of the Awards
International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said:

“We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards.

“All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
