Detectives are continuing their investigation into a serious assault that took place in Newport on Friday 4th April.
At around midday, an 82-year-old man was assaulted on Cross Lane, leaving him with injuries to his face, elbow and hand. He briefly lost consciousness during the incident. Medical staff later treated his injuries.
Appeal for information and community support
The man’s son posted about the incident on social media over the weekend, sharing further details about what happened before the assault. He also appealed to the public for any doorbell or dashcam footage that may help the investigation.
Hundreds of people responded with messages of support, and many offered gifts or assistance for the injured man.
Arrest made, enquiries ongoing
Police have confirmed that they arrested a 42-year-old man from Newport on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Officers have bailed him until Monday 7th July while enquiries continue.
They are urging anyone who was in the area of Cross Lane, School Lane or Staplers Road around the time of the assault to come forward with information.
