The Isle of Wight Council has completed the resurfacing of a final section of a shared use path at Quarr Road in Binstead using government funds from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
The works, which are on the route near the Quarr Abbey ruins through to Church Road and were carried out by Island Roads, mean the vast majority of the path from Binstead through Quarr and up to Fishbourne Lane, has been resurfaced and improved over course of the last year.
The latest improvements have seen what was a pot-holed and flood-prone route resurfaced, drainage improved and where necessary overgrown vegetation cut back.
It is already proving popular with walkers, cyclists, families and people using wheelchairs or disability scooters.
Councillor Luisa Hillard, Executive member for sustainability, environment and public realm, said:
“This is another example of the investment the council is making to off road routes using LSTF grant funding.
“We have used Island Roads to complete the final section of the route between Binstead and Fishbourne Lane to give a range users a dramatically improved and largely traffic-free route.
“More visitors to Quarr Abbey can now enjoy a peaceful walk or cycle ride to the monastery without need to take their cars.”
The completion of the route follows recent improvements to shared use paths at Seaclose Park in Newport and Wroxall to Shanklin.
