M and Co shot front

Poundland’s move to iconic former Woolworths location

A major national retailer has taken steps to turn an Isle of Wight high street shop into its new home.

Poundland is preparing to swap its current Ryde High Street store for another — the former M&Co.

Into the former Woolworths store
A planning application has been submitted to the Isle of Wight council, to install signs on its proposed new building, which was also the former Woolworths store.

Documents show the national chain is asking permission to advertise its store, as soon as possible.

Change to shop frontage
A statement submitted to the council by planning agents HLP Ltd, said the shop frontage needs to be changed as the new occupants need to show their Poundland signage.

You can view the plans, 23/01335/ADV, on the Isle of Wight council’s planning register.

The public consultation runs until 9th September.

M&Co went into administration before Christmas last year, with all of its shops nationally closing in April.

There is no mention in the planning documents of what will happen to Poundland’s current store on the High Street.

Other plans
Plans had also been lodged with the Isle of Wight council to demolish half of the M&Co store and build houses in the delivery yard, although they have yet to be determined.
