Isle of Wight sailor, Tom Buggy, with his team Vega Racing, entered the Extreme Sailing Series for the first time in Madeira Islands as the wildcard team yesterday (Wednesday).
They competed in non-points scoring practice racing.
Tom said,
“Today was absolutely fantastic, we didn’t think there was going to be much wind and then everyone started getting the fear in the harbour and the wind started howling, we changed to smaller jibs and went out and it was really really nice, flat water, much better than yesterday, less gusty and straight off the go it was perfect conditions.
“It was a bit of a baptism of fire for the guys getting in to the manoeuvres as yesterday’s wind was very light, we only had a little taste of foiling so today was a real jump straight into it.
“I was a bit apprehensive about starting racing but once we got going, Brad was looking ahead, the communication came together, because everyone is a very good sailor in their own right but they are all from solo dinghies and 49ers so trying to work as a crew is a change, plus earlier calls on manoeuvres because the logistics can take a bit longer. All of it started coming together in the end.
“Boat speed isn’t a problem with these boats it’s more the manoeuvres, the guys who are best at manoeuvres and logistics seem to do the best around the race course.
“I think realistically we could be in competition with Land Rover BAR Academy and Sail Portugal – Visit Madeira, although they have been sailing together all season. I think our main aim is to minimise the points margins and for everyone to enjoy and learn throughout the event looking forward to future events.”
When asked what do you prefer, Isle of Wight or Madeira Islands? he replied, “Isle of Wight obviously!”
