Every so often, when a large shop in the Isle of Wight closes down, there are calls on social media for the empty property to become a Primark.
The discount fashion shop is a big hit for bargain-hunters, but at the moment, Isle of Wight residents have to travel to either Portsmouth or Southampton to shop there.
With British Home Stores now closed down and emptied, the property on the High Street is being suggested as the perfect size, so the online petition started five months calling for Primark to open a branch on the Isle of Wight has been re-energised.
Primark HQ tight-lipped
So far 1,773 have supported the petition, but it wasn’t enough for Primark to let on whether they plan to move here.
A Primark spokesperson told OnTheWight this morning,
“Primark is grateful for this support. We do not comment on future plans, but the UK market is very important to us. We remain determined to offer the best value on the high street.”
Property bought for millions
Background on the building
The company that owns the building at 57 High Street, Newport has a property portfolio in excess of £80m, but it’s not know who will be replacing BHS.
The freehold to the property was bought in August 2002 for a whopping £4,100,000.
