Pupils triumphant at the Noel Turner Science Festival competition with their balloon-powered car designs

Year 5 children at St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, Carisbrooke were delighted to discover they were winners of the Noel Turner Science Festival competition, as part of the Science Festival held at Cowes Enterprise College in June.

Prior to the event, all the Primary Schools attending were invited by Johnson Electric to design a balloon-powered car that can move the furthest distance, using a range of recycled materials and a balloon to make it move.

The “Cringer” and “Chicken Nuggetmobile”
The Year 5 children at St Thomas of Canterbury were the overall winners with two designs entitled the “Cringer” and “Chicken Nuggetmobile”.

The prize of a laptop and a class set of pens, colouring pencils and technical drawing pencils, were kindly donated and presented by the competition sponsor, Johnson Electric, just before the Summer Holidays.

A spokesperson for Johnson Electric said,

“We were so thrilled to hear the children were so engaged with the activity at school and we are so pleased the prize will support the children’s education further.”

Bakewell: A great project for the children to participate in
Head of School Kate Bakewell said,

“We were absolutely delighted as a school our Year 5 children won the overall prize.

“These STEM based activities are a great project for the children to participate in, and can teach real scientific principles in a fun, hands-on way.

“I would also like to thank Johnson Electric personally for the generous prize for our school.”
