Quimantu @ Quay

Quay Arts are anticipating a festive and vibrant performance filled with a mix of Spanish and African sounds and rhythms that are fused with the traditions of Latin American Christmas.

Quimantu @ QuayQuimantu is a joyful celebration of life expressed through virtuoso musicianship, vibrant rhythms, and exuberant and sensuous melodies fuelled by a passion for musical adventure.

Richness of sound and an inspirational approach to world music are the hallmarks of this group, which brings a sharp contemporary perspective to the music of Latin America.

Since it was first formed by Mauricio Venegas-Astorga in 1981 Quimantu has gained a reputation as one of Britain’s finest Latin American bands.

Never content to languish musically, Mauricio’s enthusiasm pushes the boundaries in composition and instrumentation ensuring that the group has continued to develop through the past twenty-five years.

The line-up now includes electro-acoustic violin and bass, alongside a host of traditional instruments from South America, Europe and Africa.

Quimantu’s music speaks for itself, drawn from a bottomless well-spring of poetry, love, sorrow and friendship.

The result is a powerful musical message that has brought audiences to their feet to dance in venues across the UK, Europe and Chile.

WHAT OTHERS SAY:

“They produced some ravishing music, particularly in an Andean flute passage of bell-like purity and an instrumental cueca performed on two guitars, the charangos and percussion. It was like a masterclass of folk.” Maurice Rosenbaum, The Daily Telegraph

“Their excellent musicianship, superb technique, subtle arrangements, transform whatever they play into music which expresses themselves and their concerns”
Jan Fairley (Dr) Ethnomusicologist/Journalist/Broadcaster
