Red Squirrel numbers dropping on the Isle of Wight

The Red Squirrel population on the Isle of Wight is reported to be the lowest in 20 years, it was revealed last week.

The worrying news was came to light at a event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Wight Squirrel Project.

The Island population of Red Squirrels is said to have been around 3,500 during its peak, but is thought to have dropped to around just 2,000.

Project founder Helen Butler, said:

“Our woodland monitoring has shown depressing results. I have never before known nil sightings in both Borthwood and Bouldnor woodland.”
