Plans to redevelop a public toilet block on an Isle of Wight seafront have fallen through after the proposed developer walked away.
The Isle of Wight council is now considering its options for the closed Pier Street toilets to determine what it does next.
Earmarked for redevelopment for nearly four years
The toilets opposite Sandown Pier have been earmarked for redevelopment for nearly four years, turning it into cafe and shop with improved toilet facilities.
The plans had been approved and a preferred developer chosen but issues around the work required to the public space in front of the building held up plans.
The council said in October 2022 it was committed to the redevelopment for both residents and visitors and was working with partners to achieve the redevelopment as soon as possible.
Developer has withdrawn interest
In a recent update, however, the authority confirmed the developer withdrew their interest after receiving a final price from builders to carry out the works.
The preferred developer — not named for commercially sensitive reasons — had been in the prime position for the redevelopment since July 2021 but during the following years no contracts or sale of the land was completed despite the council’s wishes.
Planning permission now expired
The planning permission has now also expired, leaving the authority to consider its options with councillors and a question mark hanging over the project.
The toilets, while in an outdated condition, have been re-opened during the summer and for events to provide public facilities in the town.
