Ventnor’s own, actor Brian Murphy, died aged 92 at his home in Kent on Sunday morning (2nd February 2025).
Born in Ventnor, Brian was best known as the henpecked husband George Roper in the popular sitcom Man About the House and its spin-off series George and Mildred.
He later went on to perform in Last of the Summer Wine where he played the character, Alvin Smedley and has starred on stage and screen for more than six decades.
His agent told The Guardian that Brian had shot scenes for a comedy series in November last year and was due to start filming for a feature film, with a working title of The Last Goodbye, directed by Jason Figgis about “life late in life”.
The son of grocer’s assistant
According to his Wikipedia page, born 25th September 1932, Brian was the son of grocer’s assistant, Gerald Murphy and his wife Mabel, both of whom later became restaurateurs.
He is survived by his wife, Hi-de-Hi! actress Linda Regan, and his two sons.
