Residents concerned about third application to extend planning permission

An application to retain outline permission to build 181 units on land between Weeks Road and Ashey Road, Ryde has attracted fierce opposition from locals.

Planning permission was granted on appeal by the Planning Inspectorate in 2007 and permission was given by the council in 2009 and 2012 to renew the consent.

Once again, eight years after the application was given approval through appeal, permission is being sought to extend the consent.

Traffic and flooding concerns
Amongst other things, residents cite flooding and traffic problems as one of the major objections, adding the traffic report supporting the application is ten years old and out of date.

Madeline Westbury got in touch with OnTheWight about the application adding,

“Since the original application years ago there has arisen evidence that this area contributes to the flooding problems in Ryde. I accept that with population growth there has to be development, but on the level proposed this is dangerous.”

Previous justification
The officer justification for renewing the permission previously read,

The proposed application site was allocated within the Unitary Development Plan for housing and was therefore at that time considered acceptable in principle.

An outline application was later approved, following an appeal. The current application represents a renewal of that consent. The principle of residential development is therefore considered acceptable in this location and the consideration of this application is whether circumstances or policy has significantly changed since the previous approval to justify an alternative recommendation.
