Rotarians and friends raised over £1,000 towards their charitable funds at a Race Night at the Eversley Hotel in Ventnor on last Friday.
Instead of the usual film, Rotarians acted as both jockey and owner by competing against each other cutting tape with curved nail scissors.
The winners were invariably young fillies but a race for shire horses and clydesdales was a real riot.
The eight races were managed by a crack team of stewards and trainers who are now having talks with the owners of the Ascot racecourse about future co-operation.
Betting was brisk but, as usual, the bookie took the lion’s share and profits went towards Rotary’s Charity Fund.
An excellent buffet helped heal the wounds to Rotarian’s wallets.
As well as enjoying themselves at social evenings such a this race night Rotarians are involved in an astonishing array of causes – if you would like to know more about what Rotary does or if fun and fund raising appeals to you or you have some novel ideas why not ring Barrie on 852058.
