As the number of entries surpasses the 1,000 mark for the forthcoming Round the Island Race, anticipation is building amongst spectators and participants alike, with the focus turning to the vessels likely to make the early running from the starting line at the Royal Yacht Squadron on Saturday 1st July.
A new contender on the Solent
Notorious, a breathtaking Maxi 72, is the new boat on the Solent scene this season. The vessel is owned by Peter Morton, a seasoned local in Cowes, who will assume the role of skipper in this year’s race.
Sam Haines, the boat’s captain, expressed his crew’s anticipation for the upcoming event, particularly given their local ties to the Island and the race’s increasing global renown.
Aiming to return with line honours and trophies
Optimistic for favourable weather conditions and a generous wind, the team hope to return with both line honours and some trophies under their belt. Haines noted that the race will offer an excellent opportunity to hone their teamwork and manoeuvring skills ahead of the RORC Fastnet race.
The captain also expressed his appreciation for the bustling atmosphere that enlivens the Isle of Wight on race day, with numerous spectators gathered along the coast to watch the varied fleet. He strongly encouraged everyone to either take part or enjoy the spectacle from the shore.
The starting sequence and viewing spots
On Saturday 1st July at 08:00, the cannons will fire from the Royal Yacht Squadron to signify the first fleet start.
This marks the commencement of an exhilarating race involving Open 60, IRC Group 0, IRC Group 1, Class 40, and Clipper Yachts. Ideal viewing spots for the start include the Squadron or Cowes Green.
The event Website provides an excellent Observation Point Guide for the best vantage points on both the Isle of Wight and the mainland.
