Story updated 10:09 10.Aug: Added further details
As we mentioned yesterday, a team of rowers are this week attempting to break a rowing record at Cowes haven, whilst raising cash for the Africa Children’s Development Trust.
The ten volunteers have been rowing hard since midnight on Sunday to attempt to set a new British record by rowing a non-stop 1 million metres.
We popped in to see them today and Martin Scotcher told VB that the ‘Row for Life’ team had been through a very hairy moment since starting the challenge.
Monitor went blank!
The rowing machines have a LCD screen which records the distance covered by the continuous rowing. At around 10am on Tuesday morning the display went blank as they attached to a laptop to the rowing machine. Understandably the team were in a state of panic as they tried to get the display working again, fearing all of the hard work they had put in might be lost.
Rowers continued with the pace avoiding any gaps in the rowing and luckily within about 20 minutes, they had attached another display and no time was lost.
Prior to the change, they checked with Concept, the organisation adjudicating, ensuring it was all ‘legal’ and that the record attempt wasn’t affected in any way, leading to some pretty hefty sighs of relief from the team in Cowes Yacht Haven.
Show your support before they finish
The team are hoping to hit their target of 1 million metres by 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday), so if you haven’t had a chance to pop down to the Haven to show your support yet, do try and do so before then.
