Thanks to Tom for this latest report from Ryde Harriers. Ed
Ryde Harriers’ ultra-long distance running man Les Cupis continues to show his amazing ability to test himself on punishing distances as he competed in the recent Wye Valley 50 mile race.
Les was suffering cramp from mile six, but still managed to complete the course in nine hours 56 minutes. Les is looking forward to a better time and less discomfort next time!
Start of the Winter Series
Meanwhile back on the Island, Harriers started their Winter Series on a distinctly unwintry night. The sultry conditions of a late September evening made for perfect running with some fast times from a large field.
With 34 runners lining up, plus another group off on a shorter run there was a good atmosphere on the start line for the five mile race. The course was a loop of 5km followed by an out-and-back to the far end of Ryde Esplanade with plenty of scope to see your competitors and gain some motivation.
First home was Simon McMorran in 31:20 showing a return to form after a few frustrating months on injury. Simon managed to drag Tom Blackwell in his wake for second place in a time of 31:30 with Simon Newman demonstrating the effects of a summer of marathon training with his time of 32:09 giving him third.
Julie King was the first female runner across the line in 36:16 with Mary Norman second in 38 minutes exactly, very impressive on the back of a strong performance in the West WIght Triathlon. Tracey Dillon was third female in 38:55. An honourable mention should go to Jonathan Norton whose battle for the Vet 70 crown with Steve Lee continues to enthral. Jonathan followed his 5 mile championship win with another victory here, he was over two minutes in front of his fierce rival.
