Ryde Town Council is delighted to present Patricia (Pat) Maclean with a Freedom of Ryde Award for Lifelong Contribution to Sport.
Patricia (Pat) Maclean (née Hird) has been awarded the Freedom of Ryde in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to sport as both a tennis player and coach, as well as her unwavering dedication to supporting young athletes over several decades.
The award celebrates Pat’s remarkable life of quiet service and achievement, honouring her as one of Ryde’s most cherished residents.
Distinguished former British tennis player
Born on 11th November 1934, Pat Maclean is a distinguished former British tennis player and proud member of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
Pat twice reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon singles tournament and was a two-time women’s doubles quarter-finalist. Her international career included representing Great Britain in the 1954 Wightman Cup.
Dedicated her life to coaching and inspiring young athletes
Beyond her achievements on the court, Pat has dedicated her life to coaching and inspiring young athletes, fostering a love of sport among the next generation.
Her gentle wisdom and infectious passion for tennis continue to be felt at the Mead Lawn Tennis Club and during her regular visits to Wimbledon, where she remains a respected figure.
