As we reported yesterday, the council plan to cut at least £128,000 from its budget for Youth Services next year. This in from Tim Wakeley of the Liberal Democrats. In his own words. Ed
All the Members of the Ryde Youth Centre Management Committee who attended the recent AGM have resigned, en bloc.
The move comes in advance of the IW Council closing the youth centre next year and winding up youth centre management committees across the Island.
New action group formed
A new organisation called the ‘Ryde Youth Action Group’ has been formed to maintain links with the IW Council Youth Service and to represent the interests of young people across Ryde.
The assets of the Youth Centre, which were under the ownership of the Management Committee, have been transferred to the new group and will be applied to the well-being of Ryde young people although they will continue to be available to the Ryde Youth Centre until the Centre’s closure, sometime next year.
Protecting youth club premises
The Ryde Youth Action Group is now pressing to secure premises to house the Ryde Boxing Club, Judo Club and John’s Club as well as to find a new home for a social youth club.
Tim Wakeley the newly elected chairperson, said,
“Membership of the newly formed Ryde Youth Action Group is open to all Ryde based youth organisations working with teenagers.”
Tim went on to say,
“It is very important that we establish an organisation that covers the interests and well being of as broad a spectrum of young people as possible in these times of cut backs and severe financial stringency.
“Recent experience has shown just how vulnerable individual youth groups can be, together we stand a far greater chance of being able to secure funds and premises to support activities and opportunities for our young people.”
Details of the Ryde Youth Action Group are available through Tim Wakeley on 563317.
