Last Tuesday, hundreds of Shanklin residents turned out to express their concern at the closure of Shanklin Fire Station.
Local businessman, Steve Marsh, who owns and runs TJs Exercise Gym, had gathered 5,720 signatures from residents to hand over to Cabinet member responsible for the fire service, Cllr Barry Abraham.
Steve has been a retained fire fighter for Shanklin for the last ten years, so is well informed and knows what he’s talking about.
He showed VB paperwork which clearly states by the council that it would be unsafe to close Shanklin fire station before the Bay Area station is completed.
Steve and thousands of others were confused as to how the council had therefore made the decision at the July cabinet meeting to close Shanklin Fire Station prior to the alternative being in place.
