toys galore at the annual Shanklin Rotary Sale 2025

Shanklin Rotary Sale achieves remarkable £28,000 fundraising total this year

The annual Shanklin Rotary Sale raised at whopping £28,000 this year.

Every January, the Rotary Club of Shanklin organises a two-week pop-up recycling sale, an event that has been a fixture in the town for decades.

Despite a decline in membership over the years, Shanklin Rotarians remain at the core of the operation. They are joined by more than 50 volunteers from the local community, including members of the Rowing Club, Rugby Club, Men in Sheds and other residents who dedicate their time to ensuring the sale’s success.

Their combined efforts reflect the Rotary ethos of ‘Service Above Self,’ as they collect, sort, sell and recycle unwanted donations for the benefit of charitable causes.

A collective effort
This year’s sale was made possible by the generosity and dedication of many people.

Residents donated their unwanted items, van drivers collected them, and volunteers meticulously sorted through vast amounts of goods.

Sellers worked tirelessly to find new homes for these items, and the public enthusiastically supported the cause by making purchases.

The YMCA also played a key role, welcoming the two-week event and providing a space for the community to come together.

Sustainable success
The event was not only a financial success but also a demonstration of Shanklin’s strong community spirit.

Over nine and a half days of selling, the sale raised almost £28,000. Items that were not sold were donated to Island charities or sold on for ethical recycling, with only damaged and unusable donations needing disposal via a skip.

Beyond the financial impact, the sale fostered connections among volunteers, with hard work balanced by shared laughter and a sense of camaraderie.

Supporting those in need
Shanklin Rotary has confirmed that the funds raised will be used to support those in need within the community.

A small percentage will also be allocated to emergency relief efforts abroad, ensuring that the positive impact of this longstanding tradition extends beyond the Isle of Wight.

The organisers have expressed their gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this year’s sale such a success, from those who donated items to the volunteers who gave their time and effort.
