Following hot on the heels of school-level GCSE results is that of improvements in early years learning (EYL).
At last week’s Isle of Wight Executive meeting, members heard of the improvements being made when Executive member responsible, Cllr Jonathan Bacon, presented the latest paper on school attainment.
Good Level of Development score rises 19%
The paper reveals that “those in the Early Years and in Key Stage 1 are now close to or better than national averages for most measures”.
This year, the percentage of children achieving what the Government call a ‘Good Level of Development’ (GLD) was 64% compared to a national figure of 60%.
The paper states,
The Isle of Wight GLD score has risen by 19% from the GLD score of 45% in 2013 and it is now higher than the average score of 62% attained by statistical neighbour authorities.
This is a significant achievement as outcomes for young children in 2012/13 were well below both national and statistical neighbour levels.
It goes on to add,
A significantly higher proportion of children on the Isle of Wight started Year 1 in schools equipped for learning and with the foundations to progress through the educational system.
This is great news for the Isle of Wight. Hopefully those levels of improvement can be made across the entire school system.
