Small scale eco-friendly camping retreat proposed for Isle of Wight’s AONB with glamping and shepherd’s huts

Plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight council for change of use from agricultural land to tourism camping.

The plans say the intention is for the owner to convert land that is currently used for growing vegetables – and as a private weekend retreat for the applicant and his family – into a cross between glamping and wild camping, accommodating up to two bell tents and three shepherd’s huts.

The agent says this revised planning application seeks to address the previous reasons for refusal and explains that the property, Beauvale, has been within the same family ownership for many decades.

Sits within the AONB
The site is on Wilimingham Lane, between Freshwater and Yarmouth, and although it sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) there are no public rights of way either within or adjoining the site.

The agent states that there are also no views into the site from the AONB, and it is not seen at close range from any public space.

What else is included
The proposed units will be aimed at singles and couples (restricted by the size of the units) and the application also includes permission for a facilities building, an energy store (a series of batteries similar to a power wall supplying energy generated from the turbine and solar panels to the units) and the wind turbine itself.

There would also be as well as a maintenance store (to include tools, grass cutter and site equipment, as well as chemicals needed for the treatment of foul water).

The public consultation runs until 17th February 2023.
