Cowes lifeboat was among the emergency services rushed in the early hours of Sunday morning to an isolated section of coastline near East Cowes where a young woman was injured when she fell down an unstable cliff.
The woman, believed to have attended a Summer Solstice party, fell into a deep hole where there had been a major landslide, east of Castle Point. Coastguards from Newport, Bembridge and the Needles were first on the scene, together with paramedics and fire-fighters.
High tide aided rescue
The woman, in considerable pain from an injury to her right leg, was eventually lifted out of the hole by coastguards, using a flexible stretcher. After then being transferred to another stretcher she was lifted over a high wall and put aboard the Cowes Atlantic 85 lifeboat, which fortunately could get close inshore because of the high tide.
Accompanied by a male friend and a paramedic, the woman was then taken by lifeboat to the Gridiron landing at East Cowes, where she was conveyed by ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
Cowes lifeboat, which was launched at 2.39am, returned to station at 3.49am.
