Southern Water CEO lands massive bonus amid skyrocketing household bills

Despite a huge rise in bills over the next five years, the boss of Southern Water has been awarded a whopping £183,000 bonus.

As reported by OnTheWight last week, the average annual household bill for water and wastewater will rise from £420 to £603 by 2029/30. That rise is more than double the average in England and Wales and followed on the back of a 9 per cent increase in bills already announced from April 2024.

According to the company’s annual report, Lawrence Gosden received the bonus as part of a £764,000 pay package, up from £428,000 a year earlier,

Ongoing criticism
The water company has, in recent years, been fined a record £90m for deliberately dumping raw sewage into the sea, dropped to a rating of one star by the Environment Agency, and faced criticism from the Island and beyond for the regularity of storm overflows into the water surrounding the Island.

£21.5m investment
In March Southern Water argued they were addressing these matters and added that the overall spend for major waste and water improvement projects on the Island from 2020 to 2025 would be £21.5 million.
