Holy Trinity Church Ventnor are celebrating the refurbishment of their organ by holding a special ‘Welsh’ music service on Sunday March 2nd.
Last year it was discovered that the bellows were in desperate need of replacement to keep this historic organ playing. So Holy Trinity dug deep into its reserves and found the money to have the essential work done.
150 years old
The Organ has undergone several ‘makeovers’ in its 150-year history, the most notable one having been undertaken in 1908 when £1,000 was donated for its rebuilding.
A concert was given by the celebrated organist Edwin H Lemare (at that time one of the most highly paid organists in the world) whose father was the organist at Holy Trinity for 60 years.
Complete service of Welsh music
The current organist, Duncan Williams, has picked a complete service of Welsh music to accompany the 9.30am Holy Communion service in honour of St David’s Day.
As well as standard favourites such as Guide me O Thou great Redeemer, sung to Cwm Rhondda, and Love Divine all loves excelling (to Blaenwern) there will be other Welsh favourites and a beautiful, less well-known hymn sung by the choir (O Jesus, Saviour of the Lost sung to Hiraeth).
The congregation warmly invites you to join them for an uplifting service, accompanied by some stirring music.
