As News OnTheWight reported last week, Isle of Wight gaming developers Stainless Games, plan to expand their High Street offices into a large vacant retail space.
As well as helping to contribute to a more vibrant high street, as part of the wider programme of commercial frontage improvements within Newport, the currently featureless shop frontage at 130-132 High Street will be refurbished to accommodate changes designed to be more sympathetic with Newport’s Conservation Area.
Plans submitted by ERMC state:
These proposals seek to improve the overall appearance of the building by dividing up the ground floor elevation into three clearly defined entranceways with window bays proportioned to fit within the existing structure, redesigned signage and graphics to compliment the business use, and the visual reinforcement of the shopfront form through suitable detailing
With the future of the ‘high street’ moving more towards mixed use of retail, office and making spaces, this nod to the heritage of the building and its surroundings will be welcomed by many and ties in well with Newport’s designation as a High Streets Heritage Action Zone.
