We know what it’s like, you’re having a clear out at home, spend all day sorting through the shed etc, load up the car, drive to your nearest civic amenity site and then realise that it’s past closing time.
Most people might bash the steering wheel in frustration, check the opening times on the gate and then turn the car around to head home.
Sadly, that’s the opposite of what one West Wight resident did at the beginning of the year and after being caught on CCTV, he was successfully take to court by the IWC and fined £1,000 was ordered to pay costs which totalled almost £1000 (about £980).
Once the chap had been identified and he was contacted and offered the opportunity to remove the freezer, but so we’re told, failed to do so.
Apparently, he’d left the freezer bang in front of the sign which states you could be prosecuted if you leave your unwanted items outside the facility when it’s closed.
Getting rid of your fridges and freezers etc at the civic amenity centres won’t cost you a penny if you turn up during opening hours so make sure you check the times (which change during the seasons) before making your way to your nearest.
Isle of Wight Council Director of Environment and Neighbourhoods Stuart Love said “The issue of fly-tipping is a serious one as dumped waste, especially electrical appliances, can cause significant harm to the environment.
“Not only did this gentleman dump waste beneath a sign telling him it was illegal to do so, he also failed to remove the freezer when he was given the opportunity which would’ve prevented the need for legal action.
“The council will continue to crack down on fly tipping in order to deter others from doing so”
