Earlier this week, junior doctors at St Mary’s Hospital on the Isle of Wight joined thousands of others around the country to take industrial action.
The strike formed part of a schedule of industrial action due to a dispute about weekend pay, career progression, and fears of overworking.
Junior doctors show their commitment
Whilst some media have chosen to vilify the action of the juniors doctors, here on the Isle of Wight we’ve discovered a wonderful story illustrating the true commitment of our junior doctors.
An incident occurred on Tuesday nearby the strike action at St Mary’s. Junior doctors on the picket line were quick to help a woman who’d fallen an injured herself.
Eilidh Elizabeth explained,
“Another example of ‘Militant Doctors’ helping those in need no matter what the circumstances.
“This lady has kindly allowed us to share her story from Strike Day and even gave us all a big cuddle today to show her appreciation and support for our cause.
“She had fallen in the street and hit her head. She felt sick and cold and couldn’t get back up. The junior doctors of St Mary’s Hospital who were nearby rushed to her aid. Here she is covered in any available jumpers and jackets and scarves to keep her warm whilst waiting for the ambulance to reach her. It later came to light that she did have a neck injury.
“It was a pleasure to see her looking so well today and to have such overwhelming support from patients like her.”
Support for junior doctors
The level of support for junior doctors on the Isle of Wight was evident after Eilidh’s post was shared hundreds of times on Facebook this week.
Further strike action is planned for 26th January and 10th February unless talks between the BMA and the Government can reach an agreement over the proposed terms.
