Thanks to Michaela for sharing news of callouts to the Ryde Inshore Rescue team. In her own words. Ed
Ryde Inshore Rescue attended their 70th callout of the year today when a jetski with two persons onboard broke down off of Wootton.
The pair called for help shortly before 5pm and Ryde Rescue 1 soon had them under tow and returned them to their home slipway at Lee on Solent.
Yacht broken down between forts
This was their second incident of the day after being tasked earlier on in the afternoon to a 37ft yacht that had broken down between the forts.
Since the summer holidays started a week ago the crew have been kept busy with dozens of first aids, missing children and other beach related incidents along with the normal coastguard callouts.
Seven days a week cover
The station is now manned seven days a week thanks to funding from Ryde Town Council and equipment donated by Hovertravel to provide a beach safety and rescue service after the withdrawal of the Council lifeguards.
Keep slipway clear at all times
Whilst the unit is so busy they are urging beach goers not to park across the slipway opposite the lifeboat station or across the entrance to their boat bays to unload/load their cars.
During two separate incidents the crew have not been able to either get into the unit or get the lifeboats to the water due to people thinking that as they were only stopping for two minutes it would not hinder operations.
Unfortunately distress calls can come in at any time and the “Keep Clear” signs that are in place are there for a reason.
