Tactical voting takes centre stage as East Wight Primary nears vote deadline

News shared by Charity on behalf of East Wight Primary. In her own words. Ed

East Wight Primary are thrilled that over 969 people registered to vote for their secret and secure online poll.

The result of that vote will be announced this Thursday 20th June at 10am, when we declare the ‘People’s Champion’ the best tactical candidate to beat the Tories.

Cast your vote
Those that have registered in the poll have until midnight on Wednesday 19th June to cast their vote.  The secure online portal, Opavote, uses a single transferable vote system, with local electors asked to rank their preferred candidates in order.

More than six hundred people have already cast their votes.

Informed decision made by local people
The question asked is ‘Who is the best placed tactical candidate to beat the Conservatives in East Wight?;  We have encouraged everyone registered to see the candidates in action by attending one of the six hustings happening before our vote closes.

The Churches Together hustings at St Mary’s Brading last night was sold out.

For those unable to attend hustings in person, the fully booked hustings on Wednesday 19th June will be live-streamed on social media.  The recording of the Wightlink Users’ Group hustings can be found on YouTube and the recording from Brading Churches Together hustings will be available soon.

Read the candidates’s answers
We also have detailed answers from all three candidates on our website including answers to questions on ferries, housing, climate, and crucially ‘Why do you believe you are best placed to beat the Conservatives in East Wight’

George Monbiot video mentions the East Wight Primary
In another boost the campaign, George Monbiot has done a three minute video promoting the primary model and gives a shout out to East Wight.

South Devon choose their peoples champion, Lib Dem Caroline Voaden back in March and local people are very hopeful she will win the seat, in large part as a result of the primary process.

Register to vote in the general election
East Wight Primary now urge as many people as possible to register to vote in the general election, particularly young people who may not already be registered, students studying on the mainland and those with second homes here.

The deadline to register is 23.59 hrs today, Tuesday 18th June.

It takes a few minutes to register to vote. We have a unique opportunity in the new constituency to do something different, and we want everyone to have the chance to be part of it.

Co-Founder Charity Garnett said,

“We are really excited for our People’s Champion to be announced on Thursday. Chosen by local people with local knowledge of the candidates and the Island, rather than algorithms basing their view not on recent polling, but on what happened 5 years ago across the whole Island when different candidates were standing.

“This project is totally people powered, and we look forward to working really hard in the next couple of weeks to get the People’s Champion elected.  If progressive votes are split, we know what will happen, and we desperately need some hope and change in the new constituency of East Wight after 14 years of Conservative misrule.”
