A competition finalist from the Isle of Wight is encouraging creative hopefuls to enter this year’s event.
Scriptwriting for Film and Television student Ricky Santos, 29, was one of eight finalists for Creating Waves 2015, a radio advertising competition.
He said:
“Making it to the final few writers for last year’s Creating Waves was a great experience.
“I ended up in the local press, both at home on the Isle of Wight and at Bournemouth University, and I received offers of jobs and work placements from external media companies as a result.
“I’m extremely glad I entered the competition and I’ll definitely be doing it again; it’s too good an opportunity to miss.”
Work placement
The creative competition, now in its second year, is offering one lucky winner a work placement at Global, the media and entertainment group which is home to some of the UK’s best loved radio brands including Heart, Capital, Capital XTRA, Classic FM, Smooth, LBC, Radio X and Gold.
The Creating Waves initiative, which asks creative hopefuls to submit a 30-second radio ad script for the chance to further their careers, is run by personal injury advice service National Accident Helpline. The company has partnered this year with Global following the successful launch of the competition in 2015.
Beth Powell, National Accident Helpline’s Marketing Director, will be helping to judge the entries for Creating Waves 2016. She said:
“Last year’s competition showed us just how much talent there is in this competitive industry. We feel it’s important for marketing specialists such as National Accident Helpline to support aspiring creatives to get a leg up in their careers.
“Global is a dream partnership for this year’s competition. The opportunity for budding advertisers to gain access to Global’s world-famous studios in London, and for their work to be examined by top industry experts, will open doors for our winner and shortlisted entrants.”
Bolster your portfolio
As well as the chance for an internship at Global, the winner will have their script made into a real-life ad for a National Accident Helpline awareness campaign by recording artists at the Global studios. Two runners up will also have their ads made to bolster their portfolios.
Simon Forster, Creative Director at Global, became the driving force behind the partnership after spotting an article about the competition in an industry publication. He said:
“I got in touch with National Accident Helpline after spotting an article about last year’s winner, Michael Kettles.
“It was really inspiring to see what they were doing for promising creatives and I thought there was a lot of potential for Creating Waves to be even bigger and better this year.
“Global is, without doubt, one of the country’s most influential institutions for advertising. I’m really excited that we’ll be making a difference to exceptional aspiring creatives who deserve an opportunity to get a foot in the door.”
