The Island Permaculture Group have a film night coming up in October which might be of interest to you.
Cuba’s response to the emergency caused by the lack of oil when the USSR broke up and stopped exporting oil to them. This 53 minute long documentary shows the Peak Oil issue and how Cuba survived the economic ‘free-fall’ that resulted from their crisis. Within weeks of the embargo, there were day-long power cuts, fuel queues, food shortages and a seed shortage ,as everyone tried to plant their own vegetables.
With the help of Australian Permaculturalists, the Cubans started urban agriculture and evolved a community-focussed adaptation. Much was de-centralised, people helped each other and everyone ate less, but without serious health problems!
This film will be shown at the launch of Transition Island on 11th October (7pm) at the Riverside Centre in Newport.
