The tragic love of Dido and Aeneas reimagined at new Fairest Isle Festival

Last updated:

Next month sees the debut of the Fairest Isle Festival, a new vibrant three-day celebration of early music on the Isle of Wight.

Read News OnTheWight’s profile on globe-trotting Islander musician, Miriam Monaghan, who will be performing at the festival.

However, the Festival finale will see one of the opera world’s super hits also being performed: Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell.

The story
The story evolves around the fateful encounter between Queen Dido and the hero Aeneas. Both mighty and powerful, as humans they are also vulnerable and easy targets for the will of the gods.

The opera’s highlight is the divine aria “Dido’s lament”, but there is so much more to enjoy: dances, witches’ choruses and a cheeky sailor.

Don’t miss this team of fabulous soloists led by Mary Bevan (fresh from operatic success in Rome) and world-class Purcell experts, Barokksolistene – conducted by the festival’s Artistic Director, Robert Hollingworth.

Where and when
Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell takes place on Sunday 12th May from 4.30pm at All Saints, Ryde, Queen’s Road, Ryde PO33 3BG

Tickets are priced at £18 each and can be booked through the Fairest Isle Festival website.
