Tiny rise in number of Isle of Wight residents seeking out of work benefits and Universal Credit

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that 3,460 people in the Isle of Wight area were claiming ‘out of work benefits’ (wording defined by ONS) during February 2022 – these figures also include Universal Credit figures.

That’s a rise of five since January 2022, when there were 3,455 claimants, and a fall of 2,065 from February 2021 (5,525 JSA claimants).

Breakdown of claimants
Of those claiming in February 2022:

  • 2,025 were male
  • 1,435 were female
  • 5 were 16-17
  • 550 were aged 18 To 24
  • (310 were aged 18 To 21)
  • 1,920 were aged 25 To 49
  • 985 were aged 50+

That means 4.3% of the resident population of area aged 16-64 is claiming out of work benefits – 0.9% more than the rest of the South East (3.4%), and 0.1% less than the whole of the UK (4.4%).
