Readers may remember the Banana gun flash mob we mentioned last week that was planned for Saturday in Newport. Thanks to VB friend and contributor Lois Prior for sending through her report of the event. Ed
‘One way to your 5-a-day!’
St Thomas’ Square in Newport became a spectacle of banana-wielding gunfighters, who flooded the area at 1.30 pm last Saturday.
I arrived a few minutes beforehand and there was a certain air of expectation around the place.
There were several groups of people just ‘hanging about’ in a sort of ‘we’re trying to look casual about all of this but it’s not really working’ type of way.
The game was given away with the set-up of a camera, the arrival of the local paparazzi (AKA the local press photographer) and an occasional glimpse of yellow fruit, when, suddenly, one group rushed in, shouting a war-like cry, which heralded the start of the banana shoot-out.
Just like the good old days before consoles took away our imaginative play, people were running up to someone, shouting ‘bang’ and running away again, mission accomplished.
There were also people being held hostage, and even a ‘suicide banana bomber’ running up to his mate and throwing his banana in the air.
After a few minutes fun, the ‘evidence was quickly consumed and life seamlessly returned to normal.
Fun, different, and perhaps a little bit childish, but at least the participants had one of their five a day. What next I wonder?
