speedway fence work

Track work goes ahead at Smallbrook Speedway track

Thanks to Bryn for this update from Island Speedway. Ed

Martin Widman and the Smallbrook team of helpers have started on the vital repairs required to bring the Isle of Wight track up to scratch for Speedway Control Bureau approval.

An initial inspection, aided by advice from Colin Meredith one of the SCB’s Track Inspectors, identified most of the work required to be done and that included repairing the whole of the back straight fencing, blown down in the last few days of speedway action in the 2013 National League campaign. It was decided that it would be better to rebuild that from scratch and with the support of Sydenhams Builders Merchants, work has already begun.

Martin Widman said,

“This is a huge step forward for our track return this year. We initially thought of salvaging part of the fence and posts but in consultation with all parties, it was agreed that the best option was to start all over again so all the old fence and posts have been removed ahead of holes being dug to fit new posts. New fencing material will be supplied by Sydenhams but any material that can be salvaged will be used elsewhere around the track. Barry Bishop and I cannot thank the helpers enough as we make good progress and to Sydenhams for their generous support, and the additional advice on which materials to use.”

Island Speedway will be contacting all who offered their services at the recent Fans Forum held at the Ryde Superbowl and will be organising working parties in the coming weeks when we have materials available to refresh the stadium and make the repairs needed for full SCB certification.

Work continues off-track too
Island Speedway are pleased to announce that one of the UK’s largest distributors of point of sale technology and retail scales, Langley Distribution are the latest to come on board as an official programme sponsor of Island Speedway as is David Whitwell and Meon Accounting of Chandlers Ford.

Langley are based in Oldbury, West Midlands where they have been established for over forty years. Their MD John Shelley has been a long time supplier and friend of Dave Stevens, owner of the Island Speedway’s main team partner, SBS EPOS, for many years and as a regular visitor to the Island, was excited to hear of the plans of Barry and Martin, the new owners of Island Speedway.

Barry Bishop said,

“Once again our Island Speedway Business Club is working together to generate business, sponsorship and friendship and we welcome both John and Langley Distribution together with David and Meon Accounting to Island Speedway.”
