Following the decision to close two Isle of Wight primary schools, the council has announced a package of support to help pupils, families, and staff navigate the upcoming changes.
Cowes Primary School and Arreton St George’s CE Primary School will close as part of a response to falling pupil numbers, which the council says is putting pressure on education standards across the Island.
Personalised transition plans for pupils
The council has recognised that moving schools can be disruptive and has promised a range of measures to support those affected.
A dedicated officer will lead the transition process, working closely with the schools and families involved.
Support for pupils will include personalised transition plans for those who need extra help adjusting to a new school.
Pupils will also be offered access to support groups, giving them a space to talk through their feelings with others going through the same experience.
New buddy systems will match children with peers at their new schools to help them settle in and feel welcome from the start.
Staff to be offered new roles and support
The council has also outlined a range of measures for staff impacted by the closures.
These include redeployment opportunities within other schools on the Island, helping to maintain job security where possible.
Training and development will be available for those moving into new roles, alongside access to counselling services and other wellbeing support.
The transition officer will oversee all aspects of the closure process and act as a point of contact for families, staff, and pupils.
They will ensure communication remains clear and concerns are addressed as the schools move towards closure.
Council pledges continued support
Council leader Phil Jordan said,
“We understand that this transition may be challenging for some families, but we are committed to supporting our pupils and staff every step of the way.
“Our dedicated officer will work closely with the affected schools to provide personalised support, help and guidance and to ensure a smooth transition.”
The schools are set to close by 31st August 2025.
The council has encouraged parents, staff, and pupils to raise any concerns and has committed to ongoing support throughout the process to minimise disruption.
