The green tent at the Robin Hill Garden Show last weekend was home to some great ‘green’ businesses and initiative, Rapanui Organic Clothing, The Car Free Scheme and a company we’d not heard of before.
Tranzwight is looking to the Island public and council for support in developing a single rail tram service between Sandown and Cowes.
We caught up with Roger Berrisford, the mastermind behind the initiative to find out more about the scheme.
He told us about Translohr, a rubber-tyred tram, running on a single guide rail, which is far cheaper to install and operate than a traditional tram service.
The proposal is that by using the old railway alignments, the service could run from Cowes to Sandown in less than 40 minutes.
Roger stressed that this would not affect the cycle paths on that route, and as it doesn’t run on the roads, it’s not subject to traffic delays.
Where does the money come from?
Roger told us that Central Government had already funded all tramway systems in the UK.
He hopes that this project can gather the support of the public as well as the county council in order to attract Government funding.
