Two European Election posters for UKIP were stolen over the weekend.
At some point on Saturday night two fifteen foot by three foot banners were stolen from private property in Fishbourne.
Iain McKie, UKIP’s IW Parliamentary Candidate, told OnTheWight that both were highly visible and read “VOTE UKIP”. He says the matter was reported to Hampshire Isle of Wight Police and the Electoral Commission.
Freedom of speech
Rose Lynden-Bell, Chairman of UKIP Isle of Wight Branch said,
“I am appalled by the theft of the two “VOTE UKIP” banners from Fishbourne Beach at the weekend, firstly because the act showed no respect for property rights, and secondly, because it suggests that a wave of political suppression is active within society.
“UKIP are a party of free speech, and I am fearful of the motives that lie behind actions that seek to deny that freedom; and I do not care to consider the natural conclusion if these actions are not challenged.
“UKIP Isle of Wight branch consider this a criminal act and will pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels.”
Previous problems at election time
At the 2010 election, banners promoting Conservative MP Andrew Turner were defaced when someone added devil horns.
Banners for the Liberal Democrats were also reported stolen during the 2010 election campaign.
