Iain McKie, the UKIP Parliamentary Candidate for the Isle of Wight, has suggested a comprehensive investigation into Island Roads’ PFI contract.
McKie, who will stand against Andrew Turner at the upcoming general election, has stated that the Isle of Wight Council should carefully consider its position and the contract’s suitability, in light of unexpected expenditures and delayed services.
McKie says,
“I urge the Council to undertake a comprehensive review of the legal remedies it could pursue, including further action arising from contractual breaches.
“The review should take into consideration Island Roads’ ability to complete the work on time and to a satisfactory standard. This is vital for the benefit and peace of mind of all islanders.”
The Council is currently locked into a 25-year contract with Island Roads, to ‘upgrade, enhance and maintain’ the island’s highway network. The company’s recent missed PFI targets have led to the appointment of consulting firm Atkins to address concerns, incurring further costs.
McKie adds,
“We are probably too late to do anything about this particular contract.
“But we should have the right to know what we are facing over the next 23 years.”
