Ukrainian residents on Isle of Wight gather to honour fallen defenders of Ukraine

Ukrainian residents on the Isle of Wight came together at the Riverside Centre in Newport to remember those who have lost their lives in the defence of Ukraine.

Since the war began, around 500 Ukrainians have settled on the Island. Many have family members still fighting for their country’s freedom, with lives being lost every day.

A moving ceremony
The event included the raising of the Ukrainian flag and a short speech. For those in attendance, it was a deeply emotional moment.

Expressions of gratitude towards the Isle of Wight community were evident, as Ukrainian residents acknowledged the support they have received. The atmosphere was one of humility and appreciation.

Integration and contribution
Councillor Karl Love, Chairman of the Isle of Wight council, said,

“Many of the Ukrainians who arrived with little or no possessions have since become part of Island life. They have found employment, taken on important roles, and contributed to community initiatives.

“Their presence has enriched the Island’s diversity, bringing new perspectives and skills to local businesses and services.”

Hope for the future
While the event was a moment to reflect on loss, it was also an opportunity to share hopes for the future.

Many Ukrainians on the Isle of Wight continue to dream of returning home one day to a safe and peaceful Ukraine.
