In celebration of the 125th Anniversary of SSAFA – Forces Help (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) there is to be a Literary Gala in the beautiful and historic former home and gardens of Admiral Lord Calthorpe later this month.

Special attractions
Talks to be given by the well known Victoria Mather (pictured) and Lucie Whitehouse, whose latest novel is set on the Island as well as other well known local writers who will be happy to discuss their work and sign copies of their books.

There’ll be workshops on “Starting Writing” and “Creative Writing”.

A book binding demonstration; a book-exchange and to buy table as well as a talk on e-publishing and e-books.

There will be a literary quiz with a prize for the winner as well as a literary crossword with prize.

All proceeds to go to SSAFA – Forces Help
The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Families Association to support the practical needs wherever and whenever they are most needed.

Here on the Island we have St. Vincent’s Home, SSAFA’s only ex-service home in the UK. On the same campus there are 20 bungalows for disabled ex-service personnel and the caseworking office for ex-service people on the Island. Casework is both administered and run by volunteers some 20 of whom deal with 150 cases every year and the number is rising with recent conflicts.
