Can a bunch of fancy dressed pub runners beat a proper running club? Can a netball team beat a rugby, football, cricket or boxing club?
This is the Isle of Wight’s chance to find out!
As part of this year’s Ventnor carnival week, a brand new event is being held that we hope will encourage many people to take part, capture public imagination and captivate a large spectator audience.
Teams of ten runners from across the island have been invited to a relay race that will be held on the seafront, between Ventnor Skateboard Park and Bonchurch.
Five members from each team will start at either end of the 1.24 km / 0.77 mile promenade course. Each team will carry a traditional wooden baton that will be relayed between all team members until the last person arrives back at the skateboard park.
Teams will muster at the skateboard park by 6.30pm. Susan Scoccia, the Mayoress of Ventnor will start the relay race at 7pm. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest male and female teams, sports club and pub teams, and U16 team.
A special prize will also be awarded to the best, not necessarily the fastest, fancy dressed team. Presentations will take place on completion at the Winter Gardens.
The race entry fee is £20 for a team of 10 runners, or individual entrants may pay £2 per head and be allocated a team just prior to the race. It is hoped that Ventnor teams will enter from the Cricket, Tennis, Rugby, Football and Boxing clubs, together with a variety of pub and other social teams.
This is a brand new event to Ventnor carnival week and it is hoped that a variety of sporting and social teams will enter, and that the race will become a permanent feature of future carnivals – and perhaps even in other island towns too!
