Ventnor Community Learning Courses

The new season of courses from the Isle of Wight Council Community and Family Learning Service programme are start soon, giving you the opportunity to meet people and learn new skills.

Ventnor Community Learning Courses The courses are subsidised by the Isle of Wight Council and the Learning and Skills Council which means that the course fees are tiny, most equivalent to £4 per session (or £2 concessionary fee for those on means tested benefit).

The list of courses available is quite diverse so there should be something for everyone.

COMPUTERS FOR BEGINNERS
Come and learn how to use a computer in a small and supportive group. Progress from switching a computer on, to using the Internet, sending an e-mail and basic word processing.

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP
An 8 week course to explore the world of Photoshop in a series of structured activities. Develop skills in file management, basic tools, understanding of layers and text and simple manipulation of images. Edit and adjust your photographs or scanned images and produce simple montage, posters or Easter cards.

Basic computer skills are required.

PHOTOSHOP FOR IMPROVERS
Develop your Photoshop skills in a series of structured activities. Develop skills in file management, basic tools, understanding of layers and text and more complex manipulation of images. Produce a CD, Dvd or book cover for your favourite music or book or produce amazing Easter cards or posters.

Some previous experience of Photoshop is required.

INTRODUCTION TO STAINED GLASS
A beginners guide to the art of stained glass. Develop skills in foil work and basic lead work. Produce 2 items by the end of the course – a sun catcher (foil work) and a small panel (lead work).

ACTING WORKSHOPS
Acting workshop leading to a performance at an IOW Festival Competition. Work on your acting, speaking and movement skills in this friendly class. Take part in a one-act play performed at Ryde Theatre in March. Whether a beginner or more experienced – there is a part to suit you!

COMMUNITY MOSAIC
Be involved in making a large mosaic to be positioned in central Ventnor. This will be made in sections and assembled at the end. Develop your mosaic skills as well as contributing to your community and seeing your work on display for years to come.

Priority given to those with previous experience of mosaic making.

BEAUTIFUL BOWLS
An eco-friendly course to turn your junk mail into beautiful bowls. They can be purely decorative or an artistic statement! Develop papier-mache skills and decorative techniques, using a variety of art materials including paint, collage and gold leaf.

No experience necessary.

CREATIVE CRAFTS (QUILTING) – AN NCFE LEVEL 2 ACCREDITED COURSE
The course is split into 3 units:
In Unit 1 you will learn some basic textile techniques e.g quilting, patchwork, fabric painting and batik.
In Unit 2 you will research and develop one or two of these techniques that interest you the most.
In Unit 3 you will design and produce a final exhibition piece.

The course will focus on quilts as decorative panels and help to develop your own creativity.

JEWELLERY MAKING
A full day workshop to learn and develop skills as a silversmith. You can design and produce a silver pendant in the day. Develop fret work skills using a piercing saw as well as filing and finishing techniques.

Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.

CIEH LEVEL 2 IN FOOD SAFETY IN CATERING
All you need to know about Food Safety issues, including food handling, storage, cooking, cleaning, premises and equipment, safety hazards etc. This is a must if you are involved in catering or school fetes and island events. Come out with a Level 2 qualification and a certificate!

Family Learning Courses
(Family Learning Workshops for adults/carers and their children working together)

FAMILY COOKERY
(In conjunction with The Community Chef of the Rural Community Council)
The Community Chef will help you improve your cooking skills and learn about healthier eating. The course is aimed at parents/carers and their children working together to prepare a range of simple recipes for you to take away and enjoy at home. There is a limit of 2 school-aged children per adult.

The course fee includes ingredients and containers.
