Thanks to Graeme for the latest from Ventnor Cricket Club, in his own words. Ed
Cole McConchie, Ventnor’s teenage all-rounder from New Zealand, hammered a superb 150 to lead his side to a 73 run win over Hartley Wintney in the Southern Electric Premier League on Saturday.
The Christchurch-based 19 year old cracked a six and 24 boundaries in a splendid knock and shared a 91 run stand with fellow teenager Henry Bartlett (37) before dominating a 100 run partnership with skipper Ian Hilsum who made 33.
When McConchie departed, Neil Westhorpe (31 not out) and Mark Fletcher (16 not out) added a quickfire 55 for the sixth wicket as the Islanders reached a formidable 328-5 from their 50 overs.
Chasing such a huge target, the home side needed a decent start. Roger Miller made an early breakthrough before Phillips (50) pushed the score to 86-2. That was as promising as it got for the hosts, however, as McConchie proved his prowess with the ball as well as the bat by taking 3-29 as the north Hampshire team closed on 255-9, well short of their target. Hilsum took 2-27, David Beven 2-54 and Miller 2-49 to ensure Ventnor clinched a third consecutive victory.
Paultons are the visitors to Newclose on Saturday.
Collapse Costs Second Team A Rare Defeat
Ventnor second team’s proud unbeaten Hampshire League run is finally at an end.
The Steephill side, who last tasted defeat in August 2009, were beaten by 46 runs by Hythe & Dibden on Saturday.
It all looked so promising for the home team they reached 151-4 in pursuit of the visitors total of 202-7, Billy Clarke 33, Adam Wilson 39, Arshad Ashraf 28 and James Cheek, 35 easing them closer to their target. However, an astonishing collapse saw the last five wickets go down for the addition of just five runs with more than ten overs remaining with four players dismissed without scoring.
Mark Woodhouse’s side will want to put this defeat behind them as they travel to Rowledge II on Saturday.
Third Team Defeated At Freshwater
Freshwater (221-7) defeated Ventnor’s third team by 45 runs in the Harwood’s League on Saturday. Arthur Halsey was the pick of the Ventnor bowlers with 2-17 while Gary Cooper hit 38 in Ventnor’s total of 176.
Graeme Gosden top scored for Freshwater with 84.
Mark Price’s team go to Northwood II on Saturday.
