WEATHER MEANS ANOTHER BLANK SATURDAY FOR VENTNOR
The weekend sunshine failed to save Ventnor’s Southern Electric Premier League match on Saturday. The New Forest Club’s saturated square was declared unfit for play following a Friday afternoon pitch inspection by one of the League’s panel umpires.
This latest postponement meant a second successive blank Saturday for the Islanders while nearest challengers Rowledge took the opportunity to narrow the gap at the top with a nine wicket victory over Tichborne Park. Mark Whyte’s side will be hoping for better luck when they visit Trojans this weekend.
CONVINCING VICTORY FOR SECOND TEAM IN HAMPSHIRE LEAGUE
The Club’s second team match against Denmead in the Hampshire League went ahead as scheduled at Steephill in bright sunshine. Batting first, the visitors spent 42 overs crawling to 124-5, a total boosted by a generous helping of 38 extras from the home side.
The meagre target posed few problems for Ventnor who cantered to a nine wicket win, Pat Morris thumping an array of boundaries in a fine, undefeated 63 and skipper David Beven contributing 46no.
MAIDEN HALF CENTURY FOR HOSE LEADS THIRD TEAM TO VICTORY
Adam Hose, Ventnor’s promising 14 year old all-rounder, hit his maiden half century in senior cricket as Ventnor’s third team defeated Ryde Cavaliers II by 30 runs in Harwoods League division 2 on Saturday.
The young son of Jeff Hose, the former Ventnor player, hit 59 as his side totalled 175-5, and then took 2-28 to help dismiss Cavaliers for 145. Rob Holdcroft hit 52 for the Ryde team.
Ventnor retained the Maurice Lickens Memorial Trophy after a 14 run win over Putney at Steephill on Sunday. Alex Lloyd (53) Neil Westhorpe (50) and Ryan Shutte (47) top scored for the home side in their total of 201, with the Londoners falling just short of their target on 187, Dan Newman taking 4-13 for Ventnor.
This is the second year the two Clubs have met to perpetuate the memory of Maurice, a past President of both Clubs, who sadly died in 2006.
