A fine unbeaten knock of 122 from Bashley’s Michael Porter, supported by 74 from Richard Morris and 42 from Tom Jacques led the New Forest side to a formidable score of 308-6 in Saturday’s Southern Electric Premier Division fixture with Ventnor at Newclose.

The contest had begun promisingly for the Islanders with early breakthroughs reducing the visitors to 43-2 before Porter took charge, only skipper Mark Holmes with 1-36 escaping punishment as 80 runs were added from the final eight overs.

Ventnor replied in spirited fashion with Marc-Antony Eysele and Sean Willis providing an excellent base and at 178-1, the pair looked to push on. However, the dismissal of Eysele for a splendid 84 and Willis three runs later for a fluent run a ball 70, effectively ended victory hopes for the home team who closed 57 runs short of their target on 250-8, Hugh Calloway’s impressive knock of 44 at least ensuring full batting points.

The all-rounder hit a crucial 63 to get his side back on track in tandem with Woodhouse (28) before a terrific partnership of 74 for the seventh wicket between Charlie Sammons (30 not out) and Charlie Calloway whose fine unbeaten innings of 45 included five fours, clinched a welcome win.
